This July, Connexus is supporting the Samaritan’s annual campaign ‘Talk to us’, raising awareness that they are here to listen to anyone who is struggling to cope, at any time of the day or night.

24/7

The Samaritans offer listening and support to people and their communities in times of need. Every day, Samaritans volunteers respond to around 10,000 calls for help.

The Samaritans volunteers are there day and night for those who need someone to listen without judgment or pressure.

In 2020, more than 20,000 people volunteered their time for Samaritans.

  • Over 16,200 trained listening volunteers responded to calls for help.
  • Over 3,200 volunteers supported the running of 201 branches.
  • Over 1,000 prisoners volunteered as trained Listeners.

Whatever you're going through, a Samaritan will face it with you.

If you’re having a difficult time, get in touch

If you’re worried about someone else

Get involved - how you can help

On 24th July, you can get involved on social media and pledge to become a better listener to help support your friends and loved ones who may be struggling to cope.

Becoming a better listener, checking in on friends, family, and colleagues, and making some small changes could help improve and support those struggling to cope.

Why not try pledging one of the following things:

  • I pledge to listen without being distracted

Making eye contact and not looking at your phone will help you become a better listener.

  • I pledge to listen without interrupting.

Repeating what the person is saying and not jumping in and pausing shows that you are listening.

  • I pledge to check in with my loved ones more often and ask them how they are

A helpful tip is to set reminders on your phone to reach out to those that may need support. Don’t give up - sometimes, it takes a few tries before people feel comfortable to open up.

As Director of People, I am passionate about creating a workplace where people can be themselves and perform at their best. This means empowering people to prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing and supporting them to do this in a way that suits them as individuals.

Connexus listens

At Connexus, we are committed to supporting our colleagues and their wellbeing at both at work and home.

Since March 2020, many of our colleagues have been working from home due to the pandemic. We recognised early on that it was vital for their health and wellbeing to help bring them together virtually to help maintain their mental health. Through virtual coffee catch-ups, to online quizzes, we have made keeping in touch possible!

All of the managers here at Connexus have taken part in a Mental Health Awareness course through Mental Health First Aid England. This course focuses on common mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, and aims to give them the confidence to support someone on their team who may be experiencing mental ill-health.

Connexus have a team of Mental Health First Aiders who are the ‘go-to’ people for anyone at Connexus who is going through some sort of mental health issue. Beyond that initial reassurance and support, Mental Health First Aiders can help a colleague struggling to cope with the relevant help they need, including the Samaritans.
